Comments related to Hours of Service (8)

Good, I like. I go there to use SAS only, but it's good experience. Like the late hours too.

Please extend the hours of the ACES Academic Computing Facility.  It is a burden not to be able to go there later in the night to do homework.

The hours for the aces library in general need to be extended.  10:00 pm is an early time to close and many students wish to work later than this due to busy daily schedules.  Keeping the library open until midnight would be well worth the miniscule extra costs.

[ACF Note: The ACES Academic Computing Facility is a SEPARATE ENTITY from the ACES Funk Library (housed on floors 2-5). You should direct concerns about the LIBRARY to the University Library http://www.library.uiuc.edu/ . Regarding the ACES Academic Computing Facility, which is part of the College of ACES; we understand the interest in keeping longer hours, it is simply not possible at this time based on the current budget.]

Comments related to Hardware, Software, etc. (3)

It would really be helpful to have some animation software. Students now expect more than simple slides for PowerPoint and need more videos and animation (the cool stuff) to remain attentive.

[ACF Note: I’m not sure what this refers to.  Please feel free to contact me directly with suggestions for software or questions about the software that is available: jmac@uiuc.edu]

Comments about Printing System (8)

… the printing costs, and the capability of getting two sided prints are the advantages of ACES academic computing facility over other places on campus.

It would be nice if you could post how to print on both sides of a page. More people would probably do it if they knew how since a lot of people in ACES are trying to be more eco-friendly.

[ACF Note: Please take advantage of duplex [double-sided] printing! When you print, simply select the duplex option from the drop-down or icon menu giving the printer Names. Note that printed on two sides is charged to your print account as 2 pages. ]

Do not start people off with a $5.00 charge because people will start printing somewhere else.

[ACF Note: The first time you print you are purchasing a $5 block of print credits. Any remaining balance on your printing account is available to you for as long as you remain at the University (not just for one semester or one year). If you only plan to print a few pages at the ACF, you can ask your friends to release your print job and pay them the few cents it costs.]

Positive Staff Comments (5)

As an instructor, the labs we conduct are always great as programs are loaded, easy to access, and student monitors excellent.  Students can make up missed labs or missed assignments.  Thanks, you are a valuable asset.

The lab monitors are so friendly, and do a good job walking around helping, or organizing the lab.

The professional staff was terrific to work with!

Negative Staff Comments (7)

I often feel that if I have a question about the computers the student Lab Monitors will listen but will be clueless as to how to help me out. If there were some way to always have someone in the lab that knows enough about the computers that can help out just about any problem.

[ACF Note: Our Lab Attendants have a variety of technical experience and will do their best to assist users with any question, but they will not always know the answer. Unfortunately, it is beyond the purview of the ACF to provide support for non-technology, non-computer-related topics, such as statistics, econometrics, or genetics. For assistance with these topics you should contact specialists in the relevant area.]

I really enjoy working in the computer ACES computer labs. In general they are clean and fairly quiet. The only thing that gets on my nerves are the Lab Monitors' conversations. The lab is very quiet when I use it and the lab monitors seem to have continual conversations at a relatively high volume. They aren't discussing anything inappropriate it just makes it hard to concentrate.

I really like using the Facility. It is typically very quiet and I am always able to use an open computer. My only complaint is that my times the loudest and most disruptive people in the lab are the employees. They often talk to each other, and since they are opposite sides of the room, they are loud. It really bothers me when employees, who are supposed to be beneficial, cause problems.

[ACF Note: I have passed these requests for a quieter work environment on to the Lab Attendants. If you ever have specific comments or complaints about an employee, please feel free to contact me at jmac@uiuc.edu]

Clean, fairly quiet, usually always an open computer.

I like the lab because it feels friendlier in there than some others that are in basements where you feel like you are in a dungeon.  And I love the chairs!

I love the ACES computing facility.  I used to do most of my work there because I did not have a printer, but now that I do, I don't use it as often.  It was also nice to use when I had time between classes (which I don't this semester).  The atmosphere is more comfortable than all the other labs that I've been to.
